Hubert Reid "Buck" Henderson, 82, of Hendersonville, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the Elizabeth House. He was born in Green River Cove in Polk County and was the son of the late D.P. and Henrietta Bishop Henderson. He served his country during WWII in the US Navy. He was stationed on a minesweeper in the South Pacific. He was an avid gardener his entire life and grew figs and kept bees after his retirement in his childhood home in Green River Cove.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Henderson; two brothers, Montgomery and Jasper Henderson; three sisters, Sue and Marjorie Henderson and Charity Lynch.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Charlene Bloomquist Henderson; seven children, M. Elaine Henderson of Mechanicsburg, PA, Cathy Stepp of Flat Rock, Michael Henderson of Lafayette, CO, Aaron Henderson and wife Molly of Sarasota, FL, Robin Burtzos of Dekalb, IL, Melissa Stanton and husband Brian of Vero Beach, FL, Mark Henderson of Hendersonville; nine grandchildren, Christopher Stepp and wife Thonya of E. Flat Rock, Jason Stepp and wife Deirdre of Hendersonville, Steven Yocum and wife Jessie of Dixon, IL, Amy Yocum of Dekalb, IL, Reid Yocum of Franklin Grove, IL, Anna and Charles Henderson of Sarasota, FL, Owen and Brenna Stanton of Vero Beach, FL; seven great-grandchildren, Shawn, Kaci, Austin, and Kade Stepp of North Carolina and Tyler, Kaylie and Rylie Yocum of Illinois; three sisters, Ola Newman of Flat Rock, Estella Murph of Cowpens, SC, and Ellen Mitchell and husband John of Greensboro, NC; one brother, Durris Henderson of Saluda; and a sister-in-law, Nell Henderson of Hendersonville.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 7pm at East Flat Rock United Methodist Church with Richard Rhodes leading the service. The family will have a visitation starting at 6pm. A second memorial service will be held at a later date with the Rev. Tim Porter officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Buck’s honor to Four Seasons Hospice Pardee Pavillion or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Jackson Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
