WELCOME
Robert Henry Cockrell, 86, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Life Care Center of Hendersonville. He was a current resident of Dana, North Carolina, and formerly of Eleanor and Parkersburg, West Virginia.
He was the son of the late Jesse Washington and Georgia Hollis Cockrell and husband to Molly Pauline Roush Cockrell of Dana. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Robert was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was currently a member of Refuge Baptist Church and was a former member of Grace Brethren Church in Parkersburg, West Virginia. While in Parkersburg he was a member of both the Lion’’s Club and the Civitan Club.
While attending high school in Putnam County, he was an outstanding athlete and excelled in many sports. In his later years, he became an avid golfer.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by: two sons, Robert Henry Cockrell, II and his wife Sue of Dana, and Lt. Col. William Shaler Cockrell, U. S. Army retired and his wife Myra of Princeton, West Virginia; two sisters, Dymple Reed Cockrell and Dorothy Ann Hartley, both of West Virginia; four grandchildren, Leigh Anne Willis of Dublin, Ohio, Robert Henry Cockrell, III of Blacklick, Ohio, Bo Shaler Cockrell of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jennifer Lynn Tucker of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and five great grandchildren, Robert James, Rachel Anne, and Morgan Justine Willis of Ohio, Jordin Christopher and Jade Shaler Tucker of Virginia, and Sydney Sinclair Cockrell, of Hawaii.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Refuge Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Alvin Melton will preside at the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert’’s memory to Refuge Baptist Church at P. O. Box 36, Dana, NC 28724.
